
Uğur İbrahim Altay
Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality
President of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG)
Uğur İbrahim Altay was born in Konya in 1974. He completed his early education in Konya, graduating from Selçuk University in 1997 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He later earned a master’s degree in Political Science and International Relations from the same university.
Altay began his career as a project engineer and also completed his military service in Şırnak as a reserve officer in 1999. In the years that followed, he played an active role in the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB), where he served as Vice President and then President of the Konya Branch of the Chamber of Civil Engineers between 2004 and 2008.
He entered public office in 2009 when he was elected Mayor of Selçuklu, a position he held for two consecutive terms. In 2018, he was elected Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality and has since been re-elected in both the 2019 and 2024 municipal elections.
In 2022, Altay was elected as President of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) for the 2023–2024 term during the UCLG World Congress in South Korea. As of October 2023, he officially assumed this global leadership role, representing more than 240,000 municipalities worldwide.
