
Sedat Önal
Ambassador Sedat Önal was appointed as the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to the
United States in April 2024.
Ambassador Önal previously served as the Permanent Representative of the Turkish Mission
to the United Nations (2023-2024) and Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Jordan (2012-
2016). He was Deputy Minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2018 to 2023.
Ambassador Önal joined the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1985. After working at the
Department of Personnel (1985-1990) as Attaché, he was posted to Kuwait as Third Secretary
(1991-1993). He then served as Vice Consul at the Consulate-General of Türkiye in Münster,
Germany from 1993 to 1997. After returning to Türkiye, Ambassador Önal worked at the
Departments of the Deputy Directorate General for Expatriates and Bilateral Cultural Affairs
as Second Secretary during 1997-1998.
He also served as Consul to Turkish Consulate General of New York (1998-2002), Deputy
Chief of Mission at the Turkish Embassy in Tehran, Iran (2002-2005) and Consul General to
Turkish Consulate General in Vienna, Austria (2007-2009).
In 2005-2007, Ambassador Önal served as the Head of Department at the Deputy General
Directorate of Middle East in Ankara. Later, he was appointed as the Minister-Plenipotentiary
Deputy General Director at the Deputy General Directorate of Middle East (2009-2012).
Ambassador Önal was born in 1963 in Kayseri. He is a graduate of Ankara University’s Faculty
of Political Sciences. He is fluent in English.
The Ambassador is married and has a daughter.
