Mucahide Akarvarda

Mücahide Akarvardar is the Founder and Executive Director of Shadow to Reality Arts & Education, Inc., a New York nonprofit dedicated to preserving and sharing the centuries-old Turkish tradition of Karagöz & Hacivat shadow puppetry through educational performances and hands-on workshops.

Holding a master's degree from Pace University NY and a bachelor's degree in Art History from Anadolu University, Mücahide has always been passionate about the many forms of artistic expression and their ability to educate, inspire, and connect people across cultures. Throughout her career—as an archaeologist, published researcher, nonprofit leader, and educator—she has explored how art preserves history, tells stories, and strengthens communities.

Before founding Shadow to Reality, Mücahide spent more than two decades leading nonprofit initiatives, managing international cultural and educational projects, directing grant programs, and supporting humanitarian efforts in both the United States and Turkey. She also served for over a decade as Site Manager for the internationally recognized Archaeological Excavations in Turkey, where she contributed to research, publications, and lectures on Byzantine art and archaeology.

Since 2022, Mücahide Akarvardar has presented more than 200 educational shadow puppet programs, reaching over 6,000 children and families through schools, libraries, cultural centers, faith-based organizations, and community events. Her performances blend the timeless humor of traditional Turkish shadow theater with meaningful lessons about kindness, empathy, anti-bullying, environmental stewardship, family communication, and respect for diversity. Through laughter, music, and interactive storytelling, she creates a welcoming space where children absorb important life lessons without feeling like they are being lectured.

For Mücahide, shadow puppetry is far more than entertainment—it is a living art form that connects generations, preserves cultural heritage, and demonstrates how centuries-old stories can continue to educate and inspire modern audiences. As part of her commitment to preserving and sharing this treasured tradition, she offers her performances free of charge, believing that every family should have the opportunity to experience the beauty and wisdom of Turkish shadow theater.

Her work is especially dedicated to introducing this unique art form to audiences who may have never encountered it before, including American families discovering Turkish culture for the first time, Turkish-American youth who have never had the opportunity to experience a live Karagöz and Hacivat performance, and Muslim communities across America who are often unfamiliar with Turkey's rich shadow puppet tradition. Through her work, Mücahide serves as a cultural ambassador, building bridges between communities and fostering greater appreciation for Turkey's artistic heritage through the universal language of storytelling.
