H.E. Tahir Bora Atatanır

H.E. Tahir Bora Atatanır is the Consul General of the Republic of Türkiye in Chicago, a position he has held since November 2024. A career diplomat with the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2004, he has served in a wide range of diplomatic and leadership roles spanning bilateral diplomacy, multilateral affairs, NATO, and presidential foreign policy. 

Throughout his diplomatic career, Consul General Atatanır has held overseas assignments at the Turkish Embassies in Damascus, Ljubljana, and Rome, as well as at Türkiye's Permanent Delegation to NATO. In Ankara, he has served in several senior positions, including within the Office of the President of the Republic of Türkiye, where he held leadership responsibilities in foreign policy and international affairs before his appointment to Chicago. 

A native of Ankara, Consul General Atatanır earned his bachelor's degree in International Relations from the Faculty of Political Sciences at Ankara University. He later completed a master's degree at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom, where his thesis focused on the Turkish minority in Western Thrace. 

As Consul General, he oversees Türkiye's diplomatic and consular engagement across thirteen Midwestern U.S. states, promoting bilateral relations, economic and commercial cooperation, educational and cultural exchange, and strong partnerships with the Turkish American community. His work focuses on strengthening the longstanding relationship between Türkiye and the United States while fostering collaboration in business, academia, science, and public diplomacy.
