Spoken Word Poet | Educator | Activist
Amal Kassir is a Syrian-American international spoken word poet known for her powerful storytelling and global impact. She began her journey as a slam poet with Denver’s Minor Disturbance youth poetry team, which won the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Festival in 2012. Since then, she has performed in over 12 countries and 100+ venues—including orphanages, refugee camps, youth prisons, churches, and schools.
A two-time TEDx Speaker, Amal is best known for her talk “The Muslim on the Airplane.” In 2018, she addressed the United Nations in Geneva in support of women wrongfully imprisoned and tortured in Syria.
Amal’s work is deeply influenced by the war in Syria, her experiences as a Muslim woman in the United States, and the broader struggles of oppressed communities around the world. Her recent work focuses on radical healing, weaving emotional depth and advocacy into her performances and teachings.
She is the founder of The Writing Hour and House of Amal, initiatives born during the COVID-19 pandemic to guide and empower writers through isolation and uncertainty. Through these platforms, she offers speaker coaching, one-on-one mentorship, workshops, and more.
Amal continues to inspire global audiences each week, dedicating time every Wednesday to The Writing Hour—a virtual space for exploring identity, storytelling, and healing through words.
